Think back to your days as a kid and the pure joy of going swimming — whether it was a pool, a lake or a creek. The cool water, the weightlessness of floating, the fun of playing with friends all beckoned you to dive in. Put that joy into motion today and improve your range of motion with aquatic therapy. At Montereau, you can enjoy water activities in the heated pool in our Fitness Center year-round as part of our holistic wellness programming.
Just as you might guess, aquatic therapy is an exercise program performed in a swimming pool. The weightlessness you felt in the water as a kid is your ally an older adult. The buoyancy of the water assists in movement, no matter your weight or joint issues. The low-impact activities in aquatic therapy are helpful for myriad medical conditions. Many activities require no equipment, but some include balls and other water-friendly aids.
Aquatic therapy is especially useful for residents with arthritis, joint conditions, fractured bones or who find walking difficult due to weight gain. Lowering the impact on your joints provides freedom in movement to try exercises not possible on dry ground. At the same time, the water’s viscosity provides some resistance as you move your muscles and provides excellent strengthening opportunities. You can work a variety of muscle groups without having to use weights.
At Montereau, we are here to support our residents in every dimension of wellness. Physical wellness is an integral part of a healthy life. Our aquatics programming is popular because not only is swimming fun and a good workout, but the hydrostatic pressure of aquatic therapy improves joint position awareness and can decrease swelling in the joints. Additionally, the warmth of the water provides soothing and relaxing qualities for sore muscles and tight joints. Often, blood flow increases to injured areas of the body.
The following conditions can all benefit from aquatic therapy:
