Just as you might guess, aquatic therapy is an exercise program performed in a swimming pool. The weightlessness you felt in the water as a kid is your ally an older adult. The buoyancy of the water assists in movement, no matter your weight or joint issues. The low-impact activities in aquatic therapy are helpful for myriad medical conditions. Many activities require no equipment, but some include balls and other water-friendly aids. 

Aquatic therapy is especially useful for residents with arthritis, joint conditions, fractured bones or who find walking difficult due to weight gain. Lowering the impact on your joints provides freedom in movement to try exercises not possible on dry ground.  At the same time, the water’s viscosity provides some resistance as you move your muscles and provides excellent strengthening opportunities. You can work a variety of muscle groups without having to use weights.
